About us

maravelia family on the olive grove

The Maravelia estate

Theodosios Maravelias, my father, is the founder of our small family business. He took over the olive groves of around 100 hectares from his father Georgios Maravelias.

He is the one who has planted the most olive trees since 1970 and cultivates them with love. He knew that the native olive tree variety Athinolia is weather resistant and thrives in the barren and rocky soil of the Vatika region. Therefore, in our olive groves one can see some trees that are older than 250 years.

Father Theodósis, mother Anna, and aunts Miliá and Xanthí contribute to the harvest. All of them are helping. They, as most of our village Elíka, still pick the olives by hand. Due to this gentle treatment the sensitive skin of the olives is hardly damaged. So the estate with its traditions in the family is passed on with honor from generation to generation, which is perhaps the secret of our good quality olive oil.

The Harvest

For quality assurance, we supervised the daily production process in the oil mill in the neighboring village of Pantánassa and Agios Dimitris. Unlike many other farmers in the region, we do not store the olive fruit for our olive oil more than 24 hours.

In order to still get the best from the olives, we have reduced the normal temperature during cold pressing once again from 25˚ to 23˚ degrees. This means that any kind of oxidation loss and the associated loss of quality is avoided. The finished golden-green Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes out of the first pressing with a very low acidity level of 0.28% at the end. The acidity level indicates the proportion of undesirable free fatty acids, the less the proportion the better the result. A quantum leap that can be tasted.

Maria Douvogianni

It all started in her mother’s kitchen, by learning all her secrets besides the traditional recipes for handmade sweets, jam and tapenades. The love for tradition, for smells, tastes and passion led Maria to her professional path in 2001.

Maria tried to learn as much as possible about her technique and how to combine them, and started making delicious creations with local products (of her own production). She uses only fruits and vegetables, generously donated by the blessed land of Messinia.

Giorgos Mazos

Organic Corinthian Currants dried in shade, Premium Quality

Organic Corinthian Currants, known to the ancient Greeks since the times of Homer, dry in the shade. They were ultivated until now in the area of Nemea and are part of the healthy Mediterranean diet.

The natural drying process under sunshades allows the currants to preserve their aromas, their dark natural color, their full body, their non- changing flesh, their authentic flavour and ultimately their authentic taste of Black Corinthian Currants (Raisins) without the addition of any sugar.

Giorgos Mazos is a 32-year-old who holds the secret to Golden Black (recipe from Mazos’ grandfather), a sort of superfood that has been globally recognized. His raisins received the Great Taste Award 2013 and 2017 with one star
