Elika Lakonia & Athinolia

The special thing

The Athinolia is an olive variety found almost exclusively in the region of Vatika in Laconia and in some areas of northern Crete. It protects against oxidative stress and fights against the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol. It is characterized by its high content of polyphenols, intense tart aromas and excellent organic properties.

Polyphenols, for example, protect against the oxidation of blood lipids and thus reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis. It is an olive oil from early harvest and consists of 100% natural and unfiltered juice of the Athinolia olives from the south of the Peloponnese. They are harvested and immediately cold pressed in a traditional village mill. Approx. 4-5 kg of olives are needed to produce 1 liter of olive oil, which is deliberately left unfiltered to maintain its high quality.

Pure vintage oil

Acidity 0.26% and is perfect in terms of smell, taste and appearance.

Acidity refers to the proportion of unwanted free fatty acids, the less the proportion the better the olive oil.

What makes our olive oil unique?

The olives are harvested when they are still unripe and after the daily harvest the olives go to the oil mill for cold pressing at 23°C within 2-3 hours. Any kind of oxidation and loss of quality is thus avoided.

The finished golden-green Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes out of the first pressing with a very low acidity level of 0.26% at the end. The acidity level indicates the proportion of undesirable free fatty acids. The lower this percentage is, the better the olive oil is.

The olives of the olive grove of the Maravelia family are harvested by hand according to an old tradition, which does not damage the olives or the olive tree.

Virgin olive oil

In my homeland, Elika, a small village on the Peleponnes, Greece, the inhabitants live from the yield of their olive trees. Nowadays, large corporations have recognized the excellent quality of this olive oil. They buy large quantities and then mix it with inferior varieties from other countries. This blend is marketed as "virgin olive oil". The profits are considerable.

Our village Elika, our home

We are located at the south-easternmost point of Greece, i.e. at the outermost finger of the European mainland.

Elika is a small village and rises amphitheatrically on the hills, 2.5 km from the sea. Elika belongs to the municipality of Monemvasia Lakonia. Our region is popularly called Vatika and its history goes back to ancient times. Already in the Mycenaean period the region was inhabited by emigrants from the island of Kythera, an island dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Hence the ancient name of our village Elika, “Aphrodisia”. The soil of Vatika is rocky, but is rich in iron and nutrients that the plants need to grow. Vatika is well known for its products such as olive oil, onions, tomatoes and thyme honey. Our region offers a unique location for the Athino olive variety. The tradition of olive oil production in our area dates back to ancient times. Therefore, one can see
many trees that are older than 150 years.

Only the Athinoelia olive tree variety is cultivated in Elika. This olive variety produces the finest olive oil and is harvested ripe earliest, already from the middle of October.
